The Jabiru Geneebeinga Wetlands is situated
adjacent to the Casino Golf Club along Queensland Road, Casino. The wetlands
are a natural habitat area, providing a sanctuary for native birds and
wildlife. It attracts many species of birds including the Jabiru, Black
Swans and many other water birds, which you can observe in their natural
habitat. The wetlands are a public facility for recreational and educational
pursuits. A picnic area is provided at the entrance and observation points
and maintained walkways ensure maximum visual access to wildlife whilst
keeping disturbance to a minimum.
Jabiru Geneebeinga Wetlands incorporates
a mini railway, which conducts train rides every Sunday through the wetlands
and to the Old Casino Station Museum, which provides an important link
with Casino's past, when the town was a major railhead.
Proceed into the wetlands through the walkway
entrance on your left. Walk straight ahead and cross the bridge. There
is an observation point on the left where wildlife and their habitat can
be observed over the central pond. Another observation point is located
below this site closer to the waters edge.
Retrace your steps back over the bridge
and turn right to see around the east side of the wetlands. While crossing
the bridge observe wildlife and vegetation (especially the water lilies).
Further on discover Pelicans, ducks and other water birds over on the
wetlands. A seating area is located here, where the central pond can be
viewed from the east side. Continue around the central pond, passing a
seating area.
At this point a fork appears in the walkway,
turn left towards the Golf course and walk around the third pond. Observe
on the wetlands side to the east, birds such as water hens, ducks and
spoonbills. Walking further around the pond brings you to the end of this
path.
Retreat back to the fork in the road and continue on to the left, passing
by a seating area. Walk between the two ponds, seeing the delights of
yellow, white and blue water lilies.
Head towards the central pond and cross over a bridge on the left. From
here go up to the observation point (the highest in the wetland to see
the expansive wetlands views.
Walk down from the observation point and proceed through the mound area
or along the pond. Turn left across the train tracks and over the yellow
bridge and back to the picnic area.
