The Camp Oven has become a way of
life for bush cooks. Its origin was in the 19th century with the
growth of pastoral and rural regions, particularly with drovers
and farmers who were away from the homestead kitchen.
Today in Australia we are fortunate that we have
the lifestyle which enables us to carry on some of the traditions
of our forebears whilst enjoying the freedom to travel this great
country of ours.
There are many camp oven events throughout Australia,
some large, such as the one held at Millmerran every two years,
others small neighbourhood gatherings. We thought this was an ideal
opportunity to build on the vision of other bodies, particularly
the Millmerran community. This event is held in the even numbered
years – for example, 2004, 2006.
At Casino Village we have the land and facilities
to hold major events, so it seemed that the Camp Oven fitted perfectly
into the RV lifestyle. We have even constructed a purpose built
BBQ Hut with a large camp oven pit for our guests to use.
So, the National Camp Oven Festival is not seen
as taking the place of other camp oven cook offs but as being the
ideal occasion to have a major camp oven event each odd numbered year.
Not only can you enjoy the camp oven cook off - there are lots of other activities including seminars, art and craft classes, competitions, disc bowls games, demonstrations of all sorts and more!
Join with us and make this a “must do”
in your diary for this year.
